Commentary
Often mistaken for a dragon the fire drake seems to be somehow related to this old species, although all dragons will deny this strongly. (So beware never suggest otherwise to a dragon, bq).
Indeed dragons and fire drakes show many similarities, such as general appearance , although the fire drakes stand somewhat smaller, more compact and always have a red to rustbrown, thick and scaly hide.
The next power which often leads the populace to believe that it has been attacked by a "dragon" is the fact that fire drakes can breath fire like many dragons, the difference in this case is the fact that draconic fire is created by the innate magical abilities of most dragons, wether the fire drakes fiery breath is actually spat out elemental fire stored in special glands just behind the uvula of the reptile.
The elemental fire stored in the glands is however limited to one burst of fire for each day without one, up to a maximum of five bursts. Each burst consists of ten kernels of true fire which react very heavily with the surrounding air and cause the temperature to rise quite heavily.
Fire drakes are often hunted for their glands since these glands will continue to produce elemental fire kernels for a long time after the creatures demise on particulary powerful set is know to have produced kernels for 27 days after the creatures death.
Keep in mind however that fire drakes are animals and although they possess a rudimentary intelligence are unfit to star as a central part of an adventure. (well unless you are more fond of hack 'n slay)
